Extendable Wood Dining Tables
An extendable wood dining table solves a fixed problem — a footprint that works daily and scales for gatherings. FW Homestores stocks solid oak, walnut and hardwood options across butterfly leaf, draw-leaf and fold-out extension mechanisms. Closed and extended dimensions listed on every product page. Prefer a fixed format? Browse the All Dining Tables collection for non-extending options.
Solid Oak Extending Dining Tables
Oak is the dominant species in this range — tight grain, high Janka hardness and consistent dimensional stability across humidity changes. Available in natural, oiled and dark-stained finishes. Leg profiles include tapered, turned, trestle and pedestal — each available in both fixed and extended configurations. Solid oak construction throughout, no veneered panels or MDF cores.
Extension Mechanisms — Formats Available
Three mechanisms across the range:
-
Butterfly leaf — self-storing panel folds out from the table centre. No separate leaf to store. Cleanest surface join of the three formats.
-
Draw-leaf — two panels slide out from beneath the tabletop at each end. Fast to extend, no additional parts required.
-
Fold-out — hinged panel attaches at one end, folds flat when not in use. Common in smaller fixed-length bases that need occasional capacity uplift.
Mechanism type is listed in every product specification.

2. Are solid wood extendable dining tables better than veneer options?
Both have their merits. Solid wood extendable dining tables offer exceptional durability and can be refinished multiple times, potentially lasting generations. 5. What's the difference between butterfly and drop-leaf extension mechanisms?
5. What's the difference between butterfly and drop-leaf extension mechanisms?
Butterfly extensions store the extra leaf inside the table itself, creating a seamless look when closed and requiring no external storage. Drop-leaf designs feature hinged sections that can be raised or lowered as needed, often making them ideal for smaller spaces where they can sit flush against a wall when not fully extended. Our dark wood dining table collection features excellent examples of both styles.
